National Bulb Market at Keukenhof

The Dutch National Bulb Market, which will be held from 14 to 16 October, inclusive, in the Oranje-Nassau Pavilion at Keukenhof, Lisse, offers an exceptional range of exclusive and extraordinary bulbs. They are shown by growers that have specialised in the cultivating of bulbs that are anything but commonplace.

Informative
The Bulb Market will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry and parking are free of charge. The Bulb Market is not only a showcase for the sale of exceptional bulbs: the educational aspect is also given a lot of attention. Visitors can gain first-hand information about the flowering of bulbs. Specialists will explain how bulbs can be grown most successfully at home. The ins and outs of planting and colour schemes are spelt out by real-life bulb professionals.

The planting season
During the Bulb Market the international bulb-growing season will be given its official start. According to Annemarie M.M. Gerards-Adriaansens, Manager of marketing, sales and public relations, 7 million bulbs will be hand-planted at Keukenhof alone! “Our gardeners will be giving planting demonstrations during the National Bulb Market, and enthusiastic guides will be more than pleased to show visitors round the park. Guided tours will start on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.”

Year-round maintenance

‘Even after the opening season, Keukenhof requires maintenance. We take all of the bulbs out of the ground, and we till and fertilise the flower beds. The perennials border plants, the grass fields, the bushes and hedges demand attention as well. The new planting season starts again in September: first the bulbs and later, the grass seed. It’s a year-round race against Mother Nature’s clock.’

According to Johan Braam, Keukenhof gardener

Theme for 2012 is known

The theme we have selected for the coming year is “Poland – heart of Europe“. Classical music and romance form an excellent combinations with flowers. Besides, Poland is becoming an increasingly important market for Dutch cut flowers and bulbs and the number of tourists visiting from Poland is growing.

The exhibition in the Juliana Pavilion

‘The special exhibition in the Juliana Pavilion is by rights a highlight that illuminates the many ties that bind the Netherlands and Germany. The ornamental plant and tourism sectors play a particularly important role in this regard, and it is no coincidence that these disciplines form the basis of Keukenhof.’

Ton Aker, Keukenhof Park Manager
